Darwin and the Kid, written by SITS founder Attilio Favorini and directed by teaching artist Sam Turich, was created in a new collaboration with the Educational Technology Center at Carnegie Mellon University. SITS invited science teachers from the area to join us for lively discussion about evolution in today’s classroom and to brainstorm ways tobring that lea rning experience to life on the stage. In this piece for middle and high school audiences, a young student struggles with his
homework until he receives an unlikely mentor: Charles Darwin himself. They embark on an interactive voyage that combines hightech audiovisual elements with live acting. This fast-paced multi-media production introduces students to the theories of Darwin. SITS has also partnered with the University of Pittsburgh’s Gene Team, a program designed to bridge current biological research with classroom learning. Gene Team has been able to partially subsidize performances of Darwin and the Kid that accompany their Natural Selection experimental learning module.
